You probably think that the TorGuard has something to do with the Tor project. But it’s completely false. Tor was used in the name just to show torrent download availability.
And this is a very strong point of Torguard as a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This VPN provider is known for its fast download speeds and high security. They also have plenty of servers globally.
Furthermore, TorGuard offers additional services such as VPN for companies and routers with pre-installed VPN software. TorGuard may not be the most user-friendly VPN, but when it comes to fast downloading it is the absolute winner!

How fast is TorGuard?
The speed of a VPN is key. You don’t want your video to buffer or your download to last forever. That is why we have extensively tested TorGuard with various speed tests and in daily use. The results can be found below.
Speed test results
Below you can see the results of our speed tests with TorGuard as VPN. First, we tested the speed without a VPN. Then with VPN in combination with a Netherlands server. And finally a test with a VPN connection to the United States server.
Speed without VPN
These are the test results of our connection without the VPN.
Speed on Netherlands server
Here you see the speeds when we are connected to a Dutch TorGuard server. The download speed, therefore, differs slightly from the results without a VPN.
Speed on US server
These are the results of the speed test when we are connected to the fastest server in the US. For example, watching Netflix. The ping and upload speed have drastically changed, but the download speed has remained stable.
Note: Speeds may be subject to change if you change protocols. The above tests were performed with the standard settings. On one of the test computers, TorGuard did not work without making some adjustments to the settings. This slowed the speed.
Speed for regular browsing
Using TorGuard has no effect on normal internet use (browsing websites etc). We didn’t notice any difference when using social media or other websites.
Streaming video services also went smoothly. Movies took a little longer to load, but there were no significant changes. In general, we were able to watch all the videos without any problems.
As mentioned earlier, downloading is a strong side of TorGuard. We also saw this in the speed test. Even with a server in different countries, we still achieved high speeds.
TorGuard also worked well for playing games. The VPN worked very well with several games. Although we must say that the ping with a server abroad increased.
This can have problems for games where reaction speed is key. If this is the case for your favorite game, it is always smart to first try a trial version of this VPN provider (and play the game).
TorGuard speed conclusion
Our conclusions on TorGuard speed:
- Great download speeds
- No noticeable differences in speed with daily tasks
- The speed decrease if you have to change the settings
- There may be some lag when gaming
How safe is TorGuard?
Security is an essential part of a VPN. TorGuard emphasizes the anonymous downloading of torrents. Looking at the security measures they take also shows that they take this seriously. Furthermore, TorGuard also does not keep connection logs or user logs.
Below we take a closer look at the details of TorGuard. Protocols, logs and other security policies of TorGuard.
TorGuard supports OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, SSTP, and IKEV2. We have heard a lot of feedback about the poor connection quality using the IKEV2 protocol. For the top security, we recommend that you always use the OpenVPN protocol.
TorGuard uses 256-bit encryption. Also, TorGuard offers so-called “stealth protection” against Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). This means you can safely access the internet.
The VPN also has a kill switch feature. This kill switch prevents your data traffic from being exposed when you (temporarily) lose the connection.
Log Policy and Privacy
TorGuard has a strict ‘no-logs’ policy. This VPN provider is located in the US, the US is part of the ‘Five Eyes intelligence alliance’. This is a partnership between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
They help each other with collecting intelligence data. Fortunately, this has no consequences for TorGuard, because there is simply nothing they can share with the government, precisely because they do not keep anything.
What data does TorGuard keep?
To create an account, TorGuard requires a valid email address and you must use their payment methods. As long as you ensure that your given email address cannot be traced to your name, you remain anonymous. TorGuard does not ask for any other information.
If you want to remain completely anonymous, TorGuard even offers the possibility to pay with Bitcoin. When you pay with a bank account or Paypal you expose your identity. If you pay with Bitcoin, this cannot be traced and so you remain really anonymous (assuming you use a VPN when registering).
TorGuard safety conclusion
Based on our research, we have come to the following conclusions regarding TorGuard’s safety:
- TorGuard offers 256-bit encryption
- They have a kill switch
- TorGuard states that it does not keep logs.
- They support OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, SSTP, and iKEV2 protocols.
TorGuard ease of use
How user-friendly is TorGuard? To answer this question, we looked at the website, the installation process, software, payment methods, and customer service.
We noted that the user-friendliness may differ per user. For some, the VPN works immediately, and for others, we had to change some settings to get TorGuard working. If the service does not work immediately, the user-friendliness drops.
The TorGuard website
The TorGuard website looks old. However, the site has all the essential information.
You will find several tabs at the top of the site with the products they offer, such as: ‘anonymous VPN’, ‘anonymous proxy’, ‘business VPN’, ’email security’ and ‘routers’.
When you click on one of these tabs you will be taken to the corresponding site. The last heading “Buy now” leads you to the entire web store. When you have an account you will find your account page under the last tab. On that page, you can adjust all account settings.
The website looks clear, but if you are looking for specific information, this is quite difficult.
In addition, the site also has no search function, which of course only makes it more difficult to find the right information.
Furthermore, there is little information about the extra services that are offered. But TorGuard addresses these shortcomings by offering a live chatbox that gives you immediate answers to all your questions.
The TorGuard installation procedure is very simple. An installation program or app is available for almost all operating systems and devices.
These help you install the VPN at lightning speed. The installation process is as follows:
- Choose a subscription.
- Complete the payment and fill in the required information.
- Download the software on your device.
- Log in with your account details.
- Select the desired security method (or leave it on default).
- Click on ‘Activate security’ and you can surf the internet safely!
When we tried to log in via the app we got an error. This message stated that we would be using the wrong password.
Once we were sure that the password was correct, we approached customer service. The representative was very helpful and we soon had access to our account again.
We had to reset our password before we could use the app. This seems to be more common among TorGuard users. It is of course not the intention that you have to change your entire login details with every new device.
Appearance and user-friendliness TorGuard Software
The messy appearance of the app asks for improvement. The appearance feels a bit dated. Furthermore, the app also shows some information that many users find useless.
All this ensures that the software does not really have a nice design. Without all the information, the app would have felt much more intuitive.
Yet TorGuard also has its strengths, because it does have all the options that the average user requires. You can easily choose the desired server and connect or log out.
Unlike the PC version, the mobile app is much easier to use. Unfortunately, the app has the disadvantage that some features are missing.
This will not be a problem for the average user, because it is the advanced settings that are missing. But for someone who has a real interest in their security, the app might fall short.
Prices and payment options
The cost of an annual and semi-annual subscription is $5 per month. When you subscribe per quarter you pay $6.70 per month. Unsurprisingly, the monthly plan is most expensive at a price of $9.99 per month.
The image below also clearly shows that the functions of different subscriptions are all the same. The only thing that differs per subscription is the price per month. TorGuard also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee. So if you are not satisfied you just get the full purchase amount back.
TorGuard offers the following payment options:
- Credit card
- Bitcoin (or other cryptocurrencies)
These are the 3 largest payment options, but TorGuard accepts many other payment options. In total, they support 80 types of payment options.
As described earlier, the TorGuard website is not very user-friendly. That’s why customer service is even more important. It is actually easier to use the LiveChat service than if you are looking for the answer on the site yourself.
They have a customer service that is available 24 hours a day. You usually get in touch with an employee immediately via this chat.
But there are exceptions. Sometimes you have to expose some personal info before customer service helps you. This is, of course, annoying if you are very fond of your privacy.
In the LiveChat above, we usually got an immediate response and the staff we spoke to were very helpful.
You can also send a ‘help number’ to customer service, and they will immediately retrieve all data from the previous contact with you.
So that they are immediately up-to-date with regard to your questions. In addition, you can also share photos and screenshots with the LiveChat so that you can be helped even faster.
It is clear that TorGuard has really tried to make this customer service as user-friendly as possible. And they did this well.
If the default settings of this VPN do not work for you, you can ask customer service what you need to change to fix this. This does mean that some protocols and options are not compatible with some devices.
That is why we recommend that you first take a trial version, with which you can first check whether your desired settings work with your device.
TorGuard ease of use conclusion
Regarding the ease of use of TorGuard:
- The website could be a bit more organised
- Installing TorGuard is very easy
- The software looks a bit dated but works ok
- With more than 80 payment options, the process is very easy
TorGuard has a very large server network. Moreover, they also offer ‘dedicated IP addresses’ (for a small additional charge).
Number of servers and locations
TorGuard has more than 3000 servers in more than 50 countries. These servers are spread all over the world. TorGuard has servers even in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Vietnam.
You don’t normally see this and this VPN provider is one of the few with servers in these countries. If you are looking for a VPN with servers in one of these countries, TorGuard is an excellent choice.
With this VPN you can simply choose the desired server before connecting. The software shows you very easily which servers are available with the protocols you have chosen.
Dedicated IP address
As described above, TorGuard gives the option to use a dedicated IP for a small additional charge. This means that the VPN provider gives you an IP address that can only be used by you. There are a number of reasons why you would like to use this dedicated IP service.
Normally with a VPN, you use an IP address that is used by many people at the same time. This makes the relevant IP address suspicious with streaming services.
A dedicated IP address does not have this problem because only you are on this IP address. We, therefore, recommend that you use a dedicated IP from TorGuard to bypass certain GEO blocks.
There are also websites such as banks, tax authorities and certain games that take extra security measures if you often change IP addresses. This does not bother you with a dedicated IP address, because you log in every time with the same IP address.
Once you have paid for a dedicated IP address, please contact TorGuard customer service. They will help you with the desired server location of your dedicated IP. Sometimes they have to request new IPs for the location in question.
Then it takes 1 to 2 days before you are assigned an IP. TorGuard itself calls these dedicated IPs “Streaming IPs”. These Streaming IPs cost $ 7.99 per month at TorGuard (on top of your regular plan).
Servers & locations conclusion
- TorGuard has more than 3000 servers
- These servers are well spread across more than 50 countries
- TorGuard also offers dedicated IPs
More TorGuard features
In addition to the standard options that most VPNs have, TorGuard also offers a number of extra options. Below you will find all the information about this VPN provider and all the options they offer.
TorGuard and Netflix
TorGuard does not guarantee that its normal VPN will grant access to Netflix. They do offer dedicated IP addresses that are very likely to be available on Netflix. But these dedicated IP addresses do cost extra. For a VPN provider that outsmarts Netflix, you can visit our article about Netflix VPNs.
TorGuard and torrents
As the name suggests, TorGuard is an excellent VPN for torrenting. They also try to make download speeds faster and faster. We were able to download very easily without delay. This VPN provider also supports downloading with peer-to-peer networks.
TorGuard for business
TorGuard offers multiple accounts and encrypted email addresses. You also receive a dedicated IP address with a company account.
The plans for companies offer everything that is in the regular subscription and more. For example, TorGuard offers a ‘dedicated account manager’ who can help you with any questions you may have. You also get an easy control panel (see image below).
Here you can easily see which account is in your network and you can delete or add accounts.
You can also buy pre-installed routers on the TorGuard website. Installing a VPN on your router is very useful if you want to protect all your devices at once.
TorGuard sells many routers from popular brands such as Netgear, TP-link, and Asus. If you buy a router via TorGuard, you get a free VPN subscription to TorGuard for a month. These routers are a smart choice if you want all your devices well secured at once.
TorGuard capabilities conclusion
As for the capabilities of TorGuard:
- With the normal TorGuard subscription you cannot watch Netflix
- You can download torrents with TorGuard
- They offer pre-installed routers
- TorGuard offers VPN packages for companies
TorGuard is a great VPN for torrents. This VPN offers fast download speeds. TorGuard also does not keep logs and it turns out to be a safe VPN.
The user-friendliness turned out to be hit and miss. The site is of lower quality and we also had trouble getting the VPN working on one of our devices.
Customer service, on the other hand, is very good. As a result, we quickly managed to get the VPN to work on all devices. The disadvantage was that we could not use all protocols on one device.
TorGuard has a very wide range of servers and they also offer dedicated IP addresses. These may be of interest to you because normal IP subscriptions may not have access to streaming services such as Netflix. On the positive side, TorGuard offers corporate VPNs and pre-installed routers.
We don’t recommend buying this VPN if you are using VPN for more than torrenting.
