Do you live inside the UK? Want to enjoy American Netflix? We’ll tell you how!
Imagine coming back from a nice vacation in the US where you have had the unlimited Netflix library. Once you get off the plane, you can’t watch the TV series that you fell in love with while being over-seas. Or imagine another scenario – a friend of yours who lives inside the US sends you a link to a new TV show that he liked. You click on it, and here is what you see:
Does not look, right? Here’s why this happens: Netflix libraries (in terms of size and available TV shows/movies) are different in each region. Here is the map with the proof of how library size varies in each country:
Difference between the UK and the US Netflix
Netflix is definitely one of the leading streaming platforms available on the internet. It offers the most popular TV shows, movies, and exclusive entertainment content. `
After the start of the platform, Netflix quickly won the hearts of TV shows and movie lovers. It, of course, is a unique streaming platform that attracts millions of users each day. Currently, Netflix is operating in more than 200 countries. With its huge video library (more than 8,000 TV shows and movies), it is definitely worth every dollar (or pound) people spend. However, there is a catch. As we already mentioned, Netflix has geo-restrictions and some of the shows that are available in the US cannot be reached outside of the country. Here’s the chart that says a lot:
As you can see in the chart, the United Kingdom lacks tons of shows and movies that are available in the US. That is a bit unfair knowing that you are paying full price for the streaming service yet receive only half of the content.
Ok, so we already found out that people living inside the UK do not have the same access to Netflix as the Americans. So, you should probably pay less, right? Unfortunately – no. Below you’ll find the comparison of Netflix prices in both – the UK and the US.
Netflix prices in the UK
|Price per month||£5.99||£8.99||£11.99|
|Offline download devices||1||2||4|
Let’s take a look at how much do Americans need to pay to access the same service but with 2x bigger library:
|Price per month||$9||$13||$16|
|Offline download devices||1||2||4|
As you can see, there is no big difference between the pricing. Just to give you an idea, the exchange rate between pounds and the US dollars during 2019 November is £1 = $1.29, so it means that there is almost no real difference between the prices that the UK and the US citizens have to pay.
How to access American Netflix in the UK?
Netflix is a global company which should not restrict their products due to some GEO differences. Of course, there is a logical reason why some movies or TV shows are not available in specific countries: various licensing and copyright problems come into the effect.
So, how does this work? Is there a workaround of how you can watch US Netflix if you live in the UK? There is!
Netflix looks up your IP address which is designated to a particular location (country, city). The IP address is being provided to you by your internet service provider (ISP).
As your home address tells the world where you live, so does your IP address shows your location to everyone that asks for it. The good news is that your IP address can be changed very easily.
The easiest and fastest way to unlock the full Netflix content library is to change your IP address and virtually travel to another country. The best way to change your IP address is by using a VPN (a virtual private network)
Is using VPN legal in the UK? Of course, VPN usage inside the UK is completely legal.
If you choose a good VPN provider, you will definitely be able to enjoy any Netflix library around the globe (including the American, of course). Here is the recommended list of the best VPN providers for Netflix:
Rated #1 overall, NordVPN is our favorite product for Netflix US streaming from Australia. NordVPN has a huge server infrastructure with over 5000 servers, has a dedicated solution to always keep Netflix access live.
Speed is essential for streaming Netflix and NordVPN fulfills this requirement better than others.
NordVPN works on all major platforms and devices: Windows (from Windows 7 and up), macOS, iOS, Android and Linux. While connected to NordVPN via the app, you can use Double VPN or Onion over the VPN feature.
Onion over VPN gives you all the advantages of The Onion Router combined with the extra security of a VPN tunnel.
Double VPN simply means that your internet connection and history goes through two different servers. Unfortunately, we don’t recommend using Double VPN when streaming Netflix – video content will be buffering forever.
- Huge variety of servers and countries (5800+ servers in 60 countries)
- Kill switch feature
- No data logging at all
- P2P (torrenting) is allowed
- Unblocks Netflix US as well as other major streaming platforms
- 24/7 customer support (in English, German and French)
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- Option to pay in BTC, ETH, TRX
- Discounts are for longer subscriptions only
- Has a limited amount of allowed simultaneous connections
- NordVPN pricing starts from $3.49 a month for a 3-year plan. We think that the pricing is truly decent for quality service like NordVPN.

This popular VPN does allow torrenting and offers users complete privacy with their no-logging policies. On top of that, ExpressVPN has huge server infrastructure in US servers (94 different locations Worldwide) so you will be able to see any library you prefer.
We’ve done multiple speed and streaming tests with ExpressVPN. We can confirm – ExpressVPN is one of the fastest out there. Meaning that you can stream HD quality Netflix shows with no buffering or lag. Of course, this comes at a price ($6.67/month).
But it’s worth every penny of it.
- Strict no-logging policy
- Cutting-edge server infrastructure
- Unlocks Netflix US
- Rapid connection speeds
- Kill switch
- 24/7 customer support
- Supported all major devices
- Expensive compared to other VPNs
- No discounts and long plans
1-month plan can be purchased for $12.95, while their 1-year plan is $8.32/mo ($99.95/y).
Although Surfshark is a VPN market newcomer (founded in 2018), it truly is a premium service for a very good price. In our opinion, it is a great budget deal for people who want to watch American (or any other) Netflix libraries.
Surfshark completely bypasses geo-restrictions and works with all major streaming services including US Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer. However, their variety of servers and countries (800 servers in 50 countries) is a little bit poor at the moment. We believe that the number of different locations will soon improve.
Surfshark is working on every popular device and OS: Windows, macOS, iOs, Android, Linux and, of course, Android TV.
Surfshark is 100% worth the price. It is way cheaper than the biggest players such as NordVPN or ExpressVPN, but it does not yield any features. Great customer support, nice speeds and decent service which allows you to enjoy all the content you want.
- No logs
- Unblocks US Netflix
- Torrenting allowed
- HackLock™ and BlindSearch™ features
- Camouflage mod
- 6 simultaneous connections
- A small number of servers compared to competitors
Surfshark has three different plan options: 1 month, 1 year and 2-year subscriptions. 1 month plan costs $11.95, 1 year plan is $71.88 (5.99 USD/mo) and the 2 year package is available for $47.76 (1.99 USD/mo).

As well as on our main VPN review, Cyberghost receives the 4th place on our best VPN for Netflix ranking. CyberGhost VPN is based in Romania which does not belong to 14-Eyes Alliance. This allows the company to ensure a strict no-logging policy – no data about your browsing activity is being kept in its storage.
This virtual private network offers a wide range of servers (more than 4000 to be exact) in 60 countries. Cyberghost also has desktop apps for Windows, macOS, Linux. Mobile apps for iOs and Android.
As well as NordVPN, they offer browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox and on top of that. It is also a cool thing that they developed TV Apps for Amazon FireSticks and Android TV’S.
It is a good streaming and torrenting orientated VPN provider with zero logs policy. Big variety of client apps, server locations is truly an advantage and it will allow you to enjoy Netflix services.
- No logs policy
- Works great with Netflix US and Torrenting
- No DNS leaks founded
– Poor connection speeds
– Bad and questionable reviews on the internet
Cyberghost cheapest and best value plan is $99 for 3 years ($2.75/mo). Their 2-year subscription can be purchased for $88.56 ($3.69/mo) and the 1-year plan is available for $71.88 ($5.99/mo).

Hotspot Shield VPN is one of the oldest VPNs out there. There is a good reason to choose this software for Netflix (or any other platform) streaming – their servers were optimized on speed. And HotspotShield did an amazing job. You should expect no lag with this service.
You can read our full review where we did speed tests with this VPN.
Hotspot Shield is available for Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS. However, this VPN has a Chrome browser extension that might leak your DNS – it is better to avoid that extension.
HotSpot Shield is a decent option for Netflix. They have fast servers without any bandwidth limits, so you will be able to stream your favorite TV series with HotspotShield.
Worth mentioning that during our test 4 out of 5 tested servers unlocked the American Netflix, basically that was the reason why Hotspot Shield received a #5 spot on our ranking.
- Grear good speeds
- Nice and intuitive interface
- Has a free version
- Logging policy
