This is how a VPN connection works

While anti-virus software is getting less and less popular, people are more willing to get a VPN service. As Windows is probably the most popular operating system in the World, obviously there is the biggest chance to be targeted by cybercriminals.

It is worth to mention that some of the Windows operating systems (such as Windows 10) were even released with huge cybersecurity issues, such as DNS leakage or data collection and logging.

So, what do to in order not suffer from cybercriminals? That is probably impossible, but you can minimize the risk by using a VPN while browsing online. A VPN encrypts your connection so nor the internet service provider or hackers will not be able to see what you are doing with your computer. VPN for Windows allows you to unblock geo-restricted content such as Netflix or Amazon Prime, also – you can torrent in peace.

VPN is a convenient tool and you don’t have to be tech-savvy to run it on your Windows device. Most of the VPN providers have very easy to use apps and most of the time you can get connected to a VPN tunnel with one or two clicks.

It is important to know that there are many free&premium VPN providers, but not all of them are equally reliable. Some of them don’t work with Netflix, some don’t allow torrenting etc.. We did deep research of all the main VPN providers in the market and bellow you will find our TOP 5 best VPN for Windows ranking. Here are the criteria we relied on while doing our research:

– Speeds
– Price
– Logging policies
– Connection stability
– Difficulty to set up

TOP 5 VPN’s for Windows

#1 NordVPN – a global leader

NordVPN has a fast and smooth app for Windows

NordVPN is our #1 rated service overall but we have many reasons for that. First of all – the company was first to prove its no-logging policy with an internal audit. Second of all – NordVPN is based in Panama, which falls behind the 14 eyes jurisdiction. Users can feel safe and can completely rely on this service. No user information (except emails for sign-up) is stored.

NordVPN is also famous for its incredible server structure – almost 6000 servers in 60 countries available no matter which operating system you use. They also have a new feature that allows you to connect to a specific city in the US, Germany, France or the UK.

Talking about customer support – we think that NordVPN does not have any competition here. They have 24/7 live chat and email support in English, French and German languages. During our tests, the average waiting time was around 12 seconds – that is incredibly fast.

When connected to NordVPN, you can use Double VPN or Onion over VPN features. Onion over VPN gives you all the advantages of The Onion Router combined with the extra security of a VPN tunnel. Double VPN simply means that your internet connection and history goes through two different servers.

NordVPN pricing starts from $3.49 a month for a 3-Y plan. We think that the pricing is truly decent for quality service like NordVPN and it is definitely the best VPN for Windows.

#2 Surfshark – best budget VPN for Windows

Surfshark is a great option for Windows users

Surfshark is our often TOP ranking participant. It didn’t make it to our TOP3 in the Kodi review, however, it is really great service. Being a true newcomer to the VPN industry (founded in 2018), it already serves all main client apps including Windows. Surfshark declares to work with all Windows operating systems starting with Windows 7 & up, so probably all users will have access to the client.

Surfshark uses the most popular IKEv2/IPsec and OpenVPN protocols as well as the big part of VPN providers. They also have exclusive features such as Cleanweb or Camouflage mode.

Surfshark based in The British Virgin Islands. It means that there are no data-logging policies and you can browse the internet completely anonymously. We did not find any issues with the customer support dept.. They take your questions (even super hard ones) very seriously and in 100% cases, we received a reply we expected. KUDOS to them!

Surfshark service is 100% worth the price. It is cheaper than NordVPN or ExpressVPN, but it does not yield any features. Great customer support, nice speeds and access to all the content worldwide. All that & many more for only $1.99 per month.

#3 Cyberghost – decent VPN for Windows

Cyberghost is working great on Windows

As we already wrote in our full Cyberghost review, the company is owned by Kape Technologies and is based in Romania. Don’t be afraid – the country also falls behind 14 eyes jurisdiction and there is nothing to worry about. Cyberghost declares a no-logging policy and they do have a decent service for a nice price.

Straight out the box, it has all the top-tier VPN stuff – AES 256-bit encryption, OpenVPN connection packed together with IPSec protocols and many more features.

Cyberghost does seem to have qualified personnel who will be ready to answer your questions 24/7 through live chat and emails. On top of that, they have a nice FAQ library where really a big part of the questions can be answered.

The only issue that we faced while testing Cyberghost was the speeds. European servers seem to be working OK, however, we had a very big decrease in connection speeds when we were connected to the US or Australia.

Cyberghost cheapest and best value plan is $99 for 3 years ($2.75/mo). Their 2-year subscription can be purchased for $88.56 ($3.69/mo) and 1Y plan is available for $71.88 ($5.99/mo). It is worth to mention that their monthly plan is even more expensive than ExpressVPN’s – it can be purchased for $12.99

#4 ExpressVPN – premium price for a premium service.

ExpressVPN has a big variety of Windows clients

ExpressVPN is rated #2 in our overall best VPN provider list. However, we decided to give them a #4 spot in our best VPN for Windows section, as honestly there were better providers for this specific operating system.

ExpressVPN is one of the oldest and most known names in the cybersecurity industry. Based in the British Virgin Islands (same as Surfshark), it also falls behind 14 eyes jurisdiction. Overviewing all the VPN industry,  ExpressVPN is the main competitor for NordVPN and it truly is a great VPN service for beginners and advanced users. However, the price that you have to pay is really high and we think there are better alternatives.

ExpressVPN offers 3000 servers in 94 locations – an incredible amount of countries available. These numbers will guarantee you incredible speeds. ExpressVPN does allow torrenting and their services give you access to all popular streaming platforms including Netflix, DAZN, Amazon Prime and others.

As mentioned, ExpressVPN pricing is not so budget-friendly – the 1-month plan can be purchased for $12.95, while their 1-year plan is $8.32/mo ($99.95/y).

#5 Perfect Privacy – good option if you are in Europe

Perfect Privacy has nice encryption features

Perfect Privacy VPN is a Swiss-founded VPN that was developed by Vectura Data management Limited.

Perfect Privacy is a minimalist VPN that newcomers or older people can quickly adapt to. It lacks the flashy interface that comes with leading VPNs and instead employs an old school look.

This virtual private network mainly utilizes the OpenVPN protocol but it also comes with SSH and IPSec. That’s not all, it also equipped with PPTP and SOCKS5 proxies. This gives it a great foundation for security.

However, Perfect Privacy does not have a strong server infrastructure and in some cases, download/upload speeds were really poor. This private network only has 55+ servers spread out in 26 countries. If you compare this to the thousands of servers that top-ranked VPNs have you can easily see why this would be a demerit.

Let’s take a look at the pricing. The most popular option where you pay 119$ for a whole year. This comes with a 23% discount. You may also choose the more costly 214$ for a 2-year option. In a real sense, this ends up being the cheapest option as it has a 31% discount.
